From the ledger of the Gleaners

№ 004 · Bramwell Redbutton Holds the Crossing

Watercolor over graphite portrait of Bramwell Redbutton, an older stout water vole in a patched tunic holding a giant weathered red four-hole button as a shield, standing in shallow floodwater at Rainford Crossing in light rain.

Character portrait

He was not appointed to the flooded crossing. He simply arrived first, planted his paws among the cold stones, and raised the old red button when the water began to shove. By dusk, every shrewling, beetle-carrier, and field mouse had passed safely behind him. Bramwell stays a little longer, in case the rain has forgotten someone.

The stones set back in place, the tally kept day by day: this is who has been keeping Rainford Crossing all along. The ledger’s second character portrait. His print joins the shop soon. The waitlist at gleanwild.com hears everything first.
