How the Ledger Is Made
The ledger keeps honest records. This page is one of them.
The short version
Gleanwild's artwork is made with generative AI image tools, directed and edited by a human. The world, the characters, the canon, and the editorial voice are human; language tools help draft, and a person decides every word the ledger publishes. We say this plainly, everywhere we publish, because a storyworld about honest record-keeping should keep honest records about itself.
What the human does
The world came first, and it came from a person: the premise that lost human things become enormous finds for very small creatures, the Gleaners and their customs, the characters and their names, the rule that every portrait must tell a complete story. Every ledger entry, lore card, and caption is written or rewritten under a person's hand and published only with a person's approval. A person decides what an entry is about, what the found object is, what moment is worth the ink, and how the finished piece should feel.
A person also decides what you never see. Most generated images are rejected. Each piece goes through rounds of direction, critique, and revision: wrong species, wrong mood, broken storytelling, a gaze that does not meet yours. What survives is chosen, not merely produced. Curation is the craft.
What the AI does
AI image models render the artwork from detailed written direction: composition, palette, light, the house watercolor style, the exact story beat. Language models help operate the workshop itself, from drafting under human editing to keeping the pipeline running. The tools are powerful and we use them openly. They did not invent this world, and left alone they would not keep it consistent for a single week. That is the human job.
What we will not do
We will not pass the work off as handmade. We will not imitate the signature style of any living artist. We will not hide the tools behind vague words. Every platform that offers an AI content label gets one from us, switched on, every time.
Why openness
Some people will pass on AI-assisted art, and we respect that without argument. The ledger would rather be loved by people who know exactly what it is. What we ask in return is to be judged on what Gleanwild actually offers: a world with rules, characters with names, stories complete in a single image, and a keeper who cares about every one of them.
Questions are welcome: write to the ledger. The ledger is still being written.
